Batsmen hit form and injury sweats as Pakistan build blueprint for Headingley Test

Pakistan is ready for the upcoming first Test against England with a lot of confidence. They recently won a warm up match in Beckenham which gave the players a great boost. However, the main focus before the match on August 19th is a difficult team selection choice. The weather and pitches in England look very dry. This means head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed must decide if Pakistan should play two spin bowlers or stick with their usual fast bowlers.

The team feels positive because Saud Shakeel and Imam ul Haq batted brilliantly in the practice match. Shakeel scored a fantastic century and Imam made a solid eighty runs. Their great performance allowed other batsmen to get good practice too. Now that the batsmen are in good form, the team management is focusing fully on player injuries and choosing the final playing eleven.

The injury waiting game for Shan Masood

Away from the match action, all eyes remain on Shan Masood. The experienced top-order batsman sat out the warm-up match to protect his finger injury, but he has officially started his net sessions. If Shan regains full fitness before the first Test, it will provide a massive boost to the Pakistan lineup. He brings an immense amount of county cricket experience to the squad. Shan signed a two-year deal ahead of the 2023 season and proudly served as Yorkshire’s club captain across all formats during his tenure there.

The deep Yorkshire connection at Headingley

This previous experience will be crucial because the first Test is being played at Headingley, which is the official home venue of Yorkshire Cricket Club. Shan is not the only one who knows these conditions inside out. Centurion Saud Shakeel has also represented Yorkshire in the past, having played three first-class matches for the county back in 2023.

Adding to this unique connection is Abdullah Shafique. While Abdullah did not play the exact same long form format as the others during his stint with Yorkshire, he knows the environment well. The upcoming match might technically be his official Test debut on English soil, but these chilly and windy conditions are certainly not new to him.

Same name better fortune for the top Order

Abdullah’s current presence in the squad comes with a fascinating backstory. He originally entered the setup as a replacement for Abdullah Fazal. Fazal was initially selected for both series but unfortunately could not play a single match due to fitness issues. Now that Fazal is fit again, he faces a tough road back because his replacement has scored heavy runs. The face at the crease has changed, but the name and the high quality performance remain exactly what Pakistan needed.

Management plays it safe with Babar Azam

There was a brief moment of panic when Babar Azam suffered an injury scare during the practice match. However, the team management made a smart decision to keep him away from the rest of the game purely as a precautionary measure. The medical staff has already cleared Babar for the upcoming primary practice sessions.

The ultimate goal for Pakistan now is to ensure that both Babar Azam and Shan Masood achieve one hundred percent match fitness before the toss on August 19th.

If both star players return, it creates the ultimate buildup for the visitors. Saud has marked his return from injury with a spectacular match winning century, Imam has found his rhythm with a solid eighty, and Abdullah Shafique is continuing his brilliant run-scoring form. Combine this form with the extensive local Headingley knowledge held by Masood, Shakeel, and Shafique, and Pakistan looks heavily armed to challenge England in their own backyard.

Spinning puzzles and selection headache

Following the match, Saud Shakeel shared crucial insights regarding the playing conditions. He explicitly highlighted the unusual nature of the surface, saying: “I think the pitch was a bit challenging early on but it got better after a couple of days. I am not sure what the condition will be like in the first Test but seeing here, it is slightly dry and the ball was turning as well.”

These comments have triggered a fascinating selection puzzle for the Pakistan management. Since the conditions might not be traditional English green tops, head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed faces a massive test before the first Test match. The management must decide whether to chase the extra spin and field two specialist spinners alongside two fast bowlers.

If they decide on a dual spin attack, they have incredible options. Ali Usman is proving his mettle at the absolute right time, having just picked up a brilliant five wicket haul in the practice match to stake his claim. Alongside him stands Sajid Khan, who already boasts a brilliant track record in the format. However, if the management decides to play only one spinner, it will be a highly critical decision to see who gets the nod between the two.

Alternatively, if they choose to trust traditional pace and go with three seamers, the pace attack looks formidable but leaves some question marks. The experienced Mohammad Abbas is back in the mix and stands out as a first choice bowler in these conditions. Although Abbas found himself on the sidelines during the previous test in the West Indies series, his massive and long term experience in county cricket makes him a premier weapon in England. Meanwhile, Muhammad Ali has firmly established himself as the reliable second choice fast bowler in the pecking order.

The big question arises over who will step up as the third fast bowler to complete the unit. Sarfaraz will have to choose between the international experience of Khurram Shahzad and the raw talent of young Ubaid Shah.

RCAK wishes the Pakistan team the best of luck. A victory here will be highly beneficial to Pakistan and Karachi cricket.
