Karachi cricket boasts a magnificent and rich history. Over the decades, countless cricketers have emerged from this region. While some went on to represent Pakistan on the international stage, many others piled up mountains of runs and wickets in domestic cricket, yet their names faded away without wider recognition.
In the past, legendary domestic players were only celebrated within stadium boundaries by local enthusiasts because social media did not exist to amplify their achievements. We want to change that narrative. Our mission at the Regional Cricket Association Karachi is to highlight and promote every performing cricketer from our region, ensuring they are recognized not just by local crowds, but by all of Karachi, Pakistan, and the global cricket community.
Driven by this vision, we sat down with Usman Rahim, an exceptionally talented rising star from our region, to share his remarkable journey, struggles, and ultimate ambitions with you.
Roots and early journey in Karachi cricket
I started my cricket journey at the Under 16 level back in the 2015-2016 season. After that, I represented the Karachi Region in Under 19 cricket from 2017 to 2019. Following that phase, I faced a four year gap in my career. That period was incredibly difficult for me. The biggest thing during that time was the sheer amount of hard work I put in because I was absolutely determined to make a comeback. I faced a lot of challenges, but I kept pushing myself to stay motivated.
My breakthrough came last year when I represented Karachi again. I played the Hanif Muhammad Trophy first, where I scored 250 runs right in my debut match. Then I played the National T20 and put up some really strong performances. I also made my First Class debut for Karachi, scoring half centuries in both innings of just my second match. It has been a highly rewarding journey so far, and my goal now is to keep this momentum going in the future.

Early mentors and finding support at Zone 6
When I first joined Zone 6 back in 2015, nobody really knew me. That was when I met Azam bhai and Naveed bhai, who stepped up and supported me during those initial days.
Drawn back by the scent of his home soil
At one point, I actually went abroad for a year. My mindset back then was that if I was not getting opportunities here, I should move somewhere else where I could just play cricket. However, as time went by, I realized that I wanted to make it right where I started. I told myself that I would earn my selection back into Karachi cricket. I kept my motivation high, put in the hard work, and successfully made my way back into the Karachi setup.

The mindset behind a dream debut innings of 250
When I played the Hanif Muhammad Trophy for Karachi Whites, I was under a lot of pressure. It was my first major competitive appearance after a four year gap. I went in with the sole intention of building my innings step by step. I never imagined I would reach a score of 250. My mindset was simply to contribute as much as possible for the team. By the grace and support of Allah, everything fell into place and I managed to score that 250 run innings.
Icons of inspiration: learning from legend batters
I have watched and followed Kumar Sangakkara right from the very beginning. I also consider Brian Lara a major inspiration. Watching these two play is truly how I learned the game.

Both Lara and Sangakkara are two of the finest left handed batsmen the world has ever seen, known for their records, incredible run scoring ability and class. A young batsman could not pick better role models to learn the art of batting.
A dream net session partnership
Right now, if there is anyone I want to have a net session with, it is my very close friend Abdullah Fazal. It is a genuine wish of mine that the two of us get the opportunity to bat out there in the middle together someday.

Developing left arm spin alongside batting
I always make sure to put in some bowling practice right after I finish my batting sessions. Depending on how much time I have, I usually bowl around eight to ten overs. My goal is always to keep working on my bowling alongside my batting so I can maintain both skills.

Today, a player can only rely entirely on a single skill if they are incredibly consistent, much like elite stars such as Babar Azam, Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, or Kane Williamson. For any cricketer looking to make their mark quickly in the modern game, having a secondary skill is a massive advantage. Being able to contribute with both bat and ball provides crucial depth and plays a vital role in balancing any team.
Ultimate goal: The dream of a Green cap
By the will of Allah, my goal over the next year or two is to reach the level that every cricketer dreams of. I want to make my Test debut for Pakistan.
Choosing the Ultimate Format
Although I intend to play all formats, my personal preference is Test cricket.
