With the PCB officially announcing the domestic cricket calendar for the 2026-27 season on July 23, 2026, Karachi cricket is gearing up for a massive year ahead. The goals for our city are clear this time around. We want to defend our prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Trophy title and take that final step to win the National T20 Cup after falling just short as runners up last season.
The new domestic cycle runs from 11 August 2026 all the way to 15 June 2027. Because the PCB wants to help the national pool prepare for the upcoming 2027 World Cup, the season will start off with white ball cricket before moving into the longer formats. Since Pakistan hasn’t made to the semifinals since 2011, proactive measures like this is a good beginning.
For Karachi, this calendar brings plenty of action, great opportunities for local players, and important hosting duties.
Karachi Retains Elite Two Team Status
In an effort to give more players a chance across the country, the PCB has increased the total number of regional teams to twenty. Even with this expansion, Karachi stays in a select group of just four regions allowed to enter two separate teams into the main tournaments. Lahore, Sialkot, and Peshawar are the only other cities with this opportunity. This is great news for our local players, as it means double the spots are yet again available for Karachi cricketers to show their talent on the big stage.
Defending the First Class Title in a Brand New System
Our campaign to keep the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in Karachi will look a bit different this year. Last season, the tournament was played as a single pool of ten teams. Now, the PCB has introduced a brand new structure by splitting the expanded field of regional teams into two tiers with promotion and relegation.
The elite tier is the Gold Division, featuring the top eight teams in the country. This tournament will run from 1 November to 17 December 2026, and this is where Karachi will fight to keep its crown.
Below that is the Silver Division, which features twelve teams playing from 1 November to 5 December 2026. The PCB has completely replaced the old Hanif Mohammad Trophy and upgraded this second tier to official first class status. This is a massive change, as the team that wins the Silver tier will earn automatic promotion to the Gold tier for the following season.
Big Departmental Cricket Coming to Our City
Corporate and departmental cricket is making a return to a late summer slot. Karachi has been picked to host the President’s Cup Grade One, an eight team tournament played in the fifty over format. The action takes place right here from 21 August to 8 September 2026, putting our local cricket grounds and facilities under the national spotlight. Right after that, the four day President’s Trophy will begin on 12 September 2026 across various hub cities.
Finishing the Job in T20 and Scouting New Talent
After making it all the way to the final of the National T20 Cup last time and finishing as runners up, Karachi teams will want to settle the score this year. The regional twenty over matches are scheduled for early 2027, with the Silver Division running from 5 to 19 February and the Gold Division following from 23 February to 6 March.
Away from the senior teams, our youth pipeline is getting a serious boost. The PCB is running the under nineteen red ball and white ball tournaments at the exact same time to speed up player development. Even better, the official school talent hunt program is growing from four hundred and fifty schools to twelve hundred schools across one hundred districts. This massive expansion gives us a much wider net to find the best young schoolboy talent in Karachi and bring them into our academy systems.
The senior trophies are in our sights, the path for the youth is set, and Karachi is ready to play.
