Pakistan’s Test series in Bangladesh is set to begin this Friday on May 8 2026, bringing a wave of excitement, especially for Karachi cricket fans right after the conclusion of PSL. The team squad announced features a notable representation from the city, with four players from Karachi included, alongside head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed, further marking the region’s growing influence and impact on the national side.
Leading the team is Karachi’s own Shan Masood, who will captain Pakistan in what promises to be a challenging away series due to recent dominance by Bangladesh against Pakistan in 2024 in Rawalpindi. Known for his composure, smartness and tactical awareness, Shan’s leadership will be significant in testing conditions as Bangladesh team has hinted a green pitch for the first Test.
In the starting XI, Saud Shakeel is likely to anchor the middle order. Having already shown his temperament in Test cricket, Saud role becomes very important in stabilizing the innings, building partnerships, and avoiding collapses. His batting position in the team is make or break for any team. Huge responsibility rests on his shoulders to guide Pakistan team in middle and lower order.
The squad also features two exciting new faces from Karachi—Ghazi Ghouri and Abdullah Fazal—both of whom could make their Test debuts during the series. Ghazi Ghouri is less likely to make a debut due to presence of his senior Muhammad Rizwan. Muhammad Rizwan is an integral part of Test Squad who provides balance in the batting in middle and lower order. However, Presence of Sarfaraz Ahmed and Muhammad Rizwan together is a very good opportunity for Ghazi Ghori to work on his game and earn rewards out of this tour without being in the playing XI. The inclusion of Ghazi Ghori and Abdullah Fazal reflects Pakistan’s continued investment in emerging talent and the strength of Karachi’s domestic cricket structure.
Conditions in Bangladesh are usually expected to heavily favor spin, traditionally posing a challenge for visiting teams. However, this may work to Pakistan’s advantage, as all four Karachi players are well-equipped to handle spin-friendly pitches. Their familiarity with subcontinental conditions could prove vital in adapting quickly and performing under pressure. Bangladesh has hinted for a green pitch too. So this keeps Pakistan guessing what they will get on the morning of Friday.
Pakistan and Bangladesh have played 15 Test matches so far since 2001. Pakistan dominated for 23 years and won 12 out of 13 matches and drew 1 due to weather conditions. However, situation changed since 2024 when Bangladesh made a remarkable comeback and jolted the team and its structure by beating them 2-0 in Rawalpindi completing a historic 2-0 sweep. Pakistan have won 5 games at home, 7 in Bangladesh. While Bangladesh have won 2 in Pakistan and none in Bangladesh. As per stats, Pakistan seems favorite. But the last series has tilted the predictions to 50-50.
With a mixture of experienced leadership, proven senior players and fresh energy, Pakistan enters the series with optimism. For Karachi, this is a moment of pride—seeing its players not only represented in the squad but also entrusted with key roles.
As the team prepares to take the field, fans across the country—and especially in Karachi—will be rallying behind their stars, hoping for a strong start to the Test campaign.
Babar Azam has been ruled out of the first Test due to a left knee injury. Pakistan’s expected XI for the opening Test is:
Imam-ul-Haq
Azan Awais
Shan Masood (C)
Abdullah Fazal
Saud Shakeel
Mohammad Rizwan (WK)
Salman Ali Agha
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Noman Ali

*RCAK wishes best of luck to all the players representing Karachi and Pakistan!*
